Gusty winds will continue today with mountain snow showers. A reported funnel cloud in appomattox has killed at least one person, and injured several others. 20 homes have been destroyed, and more than 100 are damaged. Wdbj7s Amanda Kenney is at one of two shelters in appomatox where volunteers are waiting to help victims. Kimberly, the appotmatox Community Shelter has cots, blankets, and pillows to keep victims comfortable. Just like the rest of the town, the shelter does not have electrcity. Theres no heat here, but the lights are staying on thanks to a generator. Wednesdays storm caused Severe Damage throughout the county. Homes are damaged, trees and power lines are down, and the electricity is out. Right now. You can see behind me still very much intense here on gremerton avenue. This started about 1 00 this morning and route now we see several residents and Business Owners watching obviously very upset to see this building burn down. It started inside of sals deli and this is is just across the street from hartley park. It traveled to apartments behind the deli and quickly spread and now to the cleaners which you can see right now consumed by the flames as firefighters work to try to get a handle on this this morning. We spoke with one man who was evacuated from his home by police. Here is what he had to say. The police came by and told us to come out of the house because its too much smoke. To live right across the street and it was about 10 35 and i was laying in bed watching tv and i heard a total of five to six gunshot, loud gunshots. About maybe five minutes later, i heard sirens and helicopters and then i knew it was something serious. I thought it was the fire crackers. And i just slammed the door because i was like, i dont know whats going on but i didnt feel that safe. After that, i yell for the police coming. Reporter the nypd says some of the gunshots came from the offduty Police Officer after two suspects tried to rob the officer. It was consecutive, like, boom, boom, boom, boom, like six of those.
