Vincent van Gogh’s Sunflowers will go on show today at Canberra’s National Gallery of Australia. It will be the climax in the final room of the exhibition In a message to Australians in the exhibition catalogue, the UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson singled out the show’s star painting and the pleasure of “having the soul lifted by the explosive yellows and greens of Van Gogh’s favourite and most famous Sunflowers”. Johnson, never one to forgo a cricketing joke, also reiterated that exchanges between the UK and Australia, cultural and otherwise, are nothing new: “We have codified all manner of sports, taught you the rules and then watched, somewhat bemused, as you taught us how to play.” ....
“Happy Death Day,” a horror riff on the “Groundhog Day” model, opens with the Universal logo stopping and restarting, just as the company name is circling the globe. It’s a clever riff on the fact that audiences know what they’re coming to see a film in which the same events repeat over and over again. It’s also the filmmaking team recognizing the audience’s awareness of the goofiness for which they have willingly plunked down money. “Happy Death Day” won’t really be that playful again, and that’s the film’s biggest problem. It doesn’t seem to enjoy its own ridiculous concept enough, and yet refuses to stage any set pieces that feel honestly scary either, allowing it to fall into some weird, bland gap in between. Worst of all, it wastes the meta-idea that a lot of horror films are basically like “Groundhog Day” to an extent, as we watch relatively indistinguishable counselors at Camp Crystal Lake, for example, get killed again and again. ....
CinemaBlend In 2017, Blumhouse took audiences by surprise, yet again, with the winning success of Christopher Landon s Happy Death Day, a cheeky and clever time loop slasher horror-comedy mash-up that featured an excellent central performance from Jessica Rothe. Following its $100 million-plus box office, along with its warm response from critics and audiences alike, the movie received a likable 2019 sequel and the promise of a third installment not long afterward. While the fate of this trilogy capper to the unlikely Happy Death Day franchise still remains a bit uncertain, the lively acting ensemble behind these darkly fun and funny PG-13 romps have proven their talents in both these endearing and immensely entertaining little genre-benders and elsewhere. ....
