A Mercy Health Doctor is now recovering at home after three months in the hospital fighting COVID-19.
Dr. Channing Finkbeiner says his fight with Coronavirus began with fatigue, muscle aches and generally feeling not well.
Finkbeiner says he hadn t worked in the COVID-19 clinic for about three weeks and had practiced social distancing when he got sick.
His whole family was sick but they are unsure of how they contracted it.
A week after his diagnosis he began having trouble breathing and was admitted to the hospital.
His health took a turn and he was intubated and put on a ventilator. ....

GRAND RAPIDS, MI A doctor who had been on the frontlines fighting the COVID-19 pandemic since March, was himself fighting for his own life the past three months.
In late September, 47-year-old Mercy Health’s Dr. Channing Finkbeiner quarantined himself at home with COVID-19 symptoms until Oct. 9, when was admitted to Mercy Health St. Mary’s campus. There, he was in the intensive care unit for 47 days.
During that time, he spent 37 days on a ventilator fighting for his life. After the fifth day on the ventilator, things got so bad that palliative care was called so his family could visit with him one last time. ....

The hospital visit amid the pandemic was only allowed because he might not live.
But on Wednesday, Dec. 23, just two days before Christmas, they got to see their dad again this time hugging him as he was discharged from hospital care following a perilous three-month battle with COVID-19.
“From a medical standpoint, talking to the ICU docs and reading the reports, I shouldn’t be alive,” Finkbeiner, a family doctor with Mercy Health, said.
“The idea that I’m going home before Christmas to be with my family, I couldn’t have asked for a better Christmas present.” ....

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — A Hudsonville doctor is going home this week after three months recovering from COVID-19.
Dr. Channing Finkbeiner is a family physician for Mercy Health. He was admitted to the hospital in early October. After weeks as a patient at Mercy Health, Dr. Finkbeiner continued his rehabilitation at Mary Free Bed in Grand Rapids.
“ I am still amazed that I am here for how sick I was, and the knowledge of most patients that are as sick as I was don’t make it,” said Dr. Finkbeiner, who had been intubated throughout a portion of his care. When he gained consciousness again, he could not walk, eat, or talk like he had before. ....
