Just a few weeks after President Joe Biden celebrated Independence Day on the South Lawn of the White House, declaring a major victory in the battle against the coronavirus pandemic, the nation is in retreat yet again.
Cases and hospitalizations are climbing in every state across the U.S. as warning bells sound about the ultra-contagious delta variant that spreads at the fastest clip of any mutation seen yet.
It has led to sweeping changes in public health guidelines, as the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced new recommendations for mask-wearing last week, and a wave of COVID-19 vaccine mandates flooded the tech industry, the public sector, the health care industry and higher education.

A series of rolling deadlines have been established for those who have yet to get vaccinated, though most sites will require staff to submit proof of vaccination by Sept. 21. Exemptions will be available for religious or health reasons and must be formally requested, documented and approved.
Nearly 75% of Trinity Health employees have already gotten at least one dose of a coronavirus vaccine so far. Employees who do not meet criteria for exemption and fail to show proof of vaccination will be fired.
The health system also announced that if federal health authorities recommend a COVID-19 vaccine booster in the future, workers will need to submit proof showing that they got the booster dose.

A second major health system based in Michigan will require its workers to be vaccinated against COVID-19.
Trinity Health, based in Livonia, announced Thursday that its employees, contractors and others conducting business in its hospitals must be vaccinated by Sept. 21.
Last month Henry Ford Health System said its workers, contractors, volunteers and students must be vaccinated by Sept. 10. The five-hospital Detroit-based Henry Ford said the requirement affected about 33,000 team members.
Trinity Health officials said the vaccines help employees keep their colleagues and patients safe from the coronavirus.
“As a faith-based health care system, we have pledged to protect the most vulnerable,” said Rob Casalou, chief executive officer of Trinity Health Michigan.
