Saudi women's football television coverage to kick off


JEDDAH: The Women’s Football League could soon be televised, according to Saudi Sports for All Federation (SFA) Executive Director Shaima Al-Hussaini.
Al-Hussaini told Asharq Al-Awsat: “We strive for the second edition of the women’s league during this year 2021 to be more expanded in terms of media coverage. We’ll work with our partners in the media sector on how to broadcast on television.”
Louloua Al-Ghubaysh, a 25-year-old teacher, said that she had been brought up on football, and was one of many female football fans in the Kingdom celebrating the news.
“I’m so happy to hear this news, I personally have been watching football since I was a child. My dad used to play for Al-Ittihad, and I’m an Ittihad fan. I love soccer and watch the matches regularly,” she told Arab News. ....

Marking a historic moment in sports in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the community level Women’s Football League (WFL) saw a rousing finale to its first season with Challenge Team taking home the Champion’s Cup and an award of SR150,000.
Developed by the Saudi Sports for All Federation (SFA) with the close guidance of the Ministry of Sports; and supported by the Quality of Life program; the WFL commenced gameplay on Nov. 17, 2020, with the participation of 24 teams from Riyadh, Jeddah and Dammam, and participants ranging in age from 17-30. ....

Challenge Riyadh crowned champions of inaugural Saudi WFL campaign


LONDON: The Challenge Riyadh football team won the inaugural Women’s Football League (WFL) Champions Cup on Thursday, taking home SR150,000 ($40,000) in prize money in the process.
The cup final was the culmination of the opening WFL season, the first league of its kind in Saudi Arabia, which started on Nov. 17 with 24 teams from Riyadh, Jeddah and Dammam taking part in a city qualification round before the semifinals and final.
The “final four” saw Challenge Riyadh beat Eastern Flames in the first semifinal, with Jeddah Eagles defeating The Storm in the other before the Riyadh team saw off their Jeddah rivals in the final. ....
