COVID-19: Marion health officials seeing positive trends
COVID-19 cases, as well as coronavirus-related hospitalizations, ICU admissions and ventilator use, have been declining significantly in recent weeks, according to Florida Department of Health in Marion County officials.
Mark Lander, the administrator of the local health department, addressed the Marion County Commission on Tuesday with his bi-monthly update. He said 31,000 residents have received their first COVID-19 vaccinations and 4,170 have received their first and second doses.
Though the weekly trend shows a decline, there has been a rise in recent days of current hospitalizations and ICU admissions related to COVID-19.
Current hospitalizations have risen from 114 on Jan. 29 to 132 on Tuesday; the record was 152 a few weeks ago. The number of people in the ICU with COVID-19 jumped from 17 on Jan. 29 to 27 on Tuesday, according to state data. ....

Marion COVID-19 vaccine appointments: Officials to contact waiting seniors

Marion County health officials are ramping up communication with thousands of seniors who have registered for the COVID-19 vaccine but have not yet gotten calls to set appointments.
Those people will receive emails notifying them where they are on the list and an estimated time when they may be called to set an appointment. Those who do not have email addresses will get phone calls.
During their regularly scheduled meeting on Tuesday, county commissioners emphasized that the local health department is not holding back vaccines. There is just more demand than supply right now.
Mark Lander, the local health department administrator, told commissioners that Marion has received 2,925 doses of vaccines from the state each week for the past three weeks. ....

Longtime Marion County Clerk of Court David Ellspermann honored
On Tuesday, after 24 years, David Ellspermann worked his last Marion County Commission meeting.
The longtime Marion County Clerk of the Court and Comptroller will leave office in January after nearly a quarter of a century in the position. Greg Harrell will take over after running unopposed in November s election.
Ellspermann, who in his role also serves as the clerk of the Board of County Commissioners, auditor, recorder and custodian of all county funds, has been a fixture at the commission meetings.
On Tuesday, the commission issued a proclamation in Ellspermann s honor for the work he has done, including his efforts to make public records available online and his three-time selection as Clerk of the Year by the Florida Clerks and Comptrollers Association. ....
