The County Commission on Thursday agreed to schedule a workshop for Aug. 11 or 12 to further discuss the 2021-22 budget request from the Marion County Sheriff s Office.
Commissioners this week expressed concern about the proposed spending plan and asked Sheriff Billy Woods to reconsider some areas, with a goal of increasing the number of personnel in road patrol and at the county jail. Woods defended his budget and his right to operate his agency as he sees fit. ....

Commissioners and sheriff agree: We need more deputies on the road and working in the jail
The commissioners did not dispute the need for eight additional road deputies. If anything, they favor Woods bringing on more. They also support Woods proposal to hire four more detention deputies and four more detention assistants at the Marion County Jail, where all agree the existing staff needs reinforcement.
The commissioners objection was Woods plan to spend money elsewhere, such as five additional call takers for non-emergency calls at the communications center. The county believes that task can be handled by its existing staff. ....

COVID-19: Marion health officials seeing positive trends
COVID-19 cases, as well as coronavirus-related hospitalizations, ICU admissions and ventilator use, have been declining significantly in recent weeks, according to Florida Department of Health in Marion County officials.
Mark Lander, the administrator of the local health department, addressed the Marion County Commission on Tuesday with his bi-monthly update. He said 31,000 residents have received their first COVID-19 vaccinations and 4,170 have received their first and second doses.
Though the weekly trend shows a decline, there has been a rise in recent days of current hospitalizations and ICU admissions related to COVID-19.
Current hospitalizations have risen from 114 on Jan. 29 to 132 on Tuesday; the record was 152 a few weeks ago. The number of people in the ICU with COVID-19 jumped from 17 on Jan. 29 to 27 on Tuesday, according to state data. ....
