lord, what a shocking moment there from turkey. good morning to you this monday, i m jim sciutto. and i m erica hill. the death toll continues to rise after this catastrophic 7.8 magnitude earthquake which struck near the border of turkey and syria. more than 1,800 people are now reported dead, but there are concerns that that number could ultimately reach into the tens of thousands. at this hour desperate rescue operations underway. crews searching for survivors who may be trapped under piles of rubble. here you see this is the moment that a child you see in the arms there of that rescue worker, a child was pulled from debris this was in northwest syria, a region which of course already heavily impacted after years of a bloody civil war. in each city, in each village, across northwest sudan there are people under rubble. the number of trapped people under the rubble, it s countless up to now. we don t have exact number. countless. multiple powerful after shocks have al
i m john berman in ft. myers, florida, and the storm has intensified again. 85-mile-per-hour winds, heading towards the carolinas. this after tearing the destructive path across florida. it is expected to make landfall in south carolina around midday, somewhere between charleston and myrtle beach. it could produce life-threatening floods there in the carolinas. this is already liskely the largest natural disaster in florida s history. i m standing in the middle of some of the damage, in a marina where the boats have been washed up on to the shore here. parts of florida have been seriously damaged. as of this morning, 19 storm-related deaths. that number will almost certainly rise. in ft. myers beach, some of the destruction is breathtaking. i had a chance to have an aerial view of it, take a helicopter ride over, and there were sections that were just washed away. the pier, the large pier there, you can see it almost better from air. that s just been completely washed away. a
water starting to come up. they are expecting a nine-foot tide here around noon. flood stage in this area is around seven feet. the roads right now look pretty good, very little rain, very little wind at the moment but they re expecting all of that to change. the big concern here is that tide and the storm surge. those two things together. the storm surge and that landfall for ian is meant to come around the same time as that tide. depending upon where it hits, that could really push a lot more water into charleston, charleston county. charleston is now at its highest level of alert. they are warning anyone at lower levels to watch what is going on, seek higher ground if necessary. they are already starting to shut down roads in charleston itself. so they are prepared for whatever ian has. it s just not clear how big a punch it s going to take here in south carolina. back to you. all you can do now is wait. mig ed marquez in charlton, we ll come back to you shortly. let go
the country in traffic accidents from freezing to death in the elements or from a range of other causes as a direct result of this storm. multiday snowfall totals have been titanic, up to 43 inches in hard hit buffalo. governor hochul requesting a federal disaster declaration due to the historic winter storm. it is devastating. it is going to a warzone and the vehicles along the sides of the roads are shocking. it is not just small vehicles, it is literally snowplows, it is major size recovery vehicles and utility vehicles and tow trucks. so we have a real challenge right now are we have roads blocked. roads are literally blocked by emergency vehicles so that has made it extremely challenging for us. effect on air travel on a crucial holiday week end was nothing shorts of catastrophic. there were a total of more than 11,000 flights canceled friday, saturday and sunday. this morning so far airlines have canceled another 1300 flights. nationwide more than 60,000 homes and bus
