Justice must be delivered according to the law - Supreme Court Judge

Colombo (News 1s); “My desire is to do justice to mankind in accordance with the law and acting according to my conscience and without any distinction as to race, religion, language, gender, identity, the status of parties or any other factors,” said Justice Kumudini Wickramasinghe at the Ceremonial Sitting at the Supreme Court on Wednesday (20).
“We have to work together to dispense justice to the society and clear the backlog,” said Justice Kumudini Wickramasinghe noting that the staff also should be trained accordingly and provided with sufficient facilities.
The current situation in the country warrants the utilization of online platforms to hear cases since it is not healthy for a country to halt its judicial functions even in a time of a pandemic, she said. ....

Judges should not have agendas - Attorney General

Colombo (News 1st); Judges cannot use the judicial platform to satisfy 3rd party and personal interest and have agendas and should at all times avoid possible conflicts of interest, said Attorney General Dappula De Livera on Thursday (21).
He was speaking at the Ceremonial Sitting to welcome Justice Janak De Silva, Justice Achala Wengappuli, and Justice Mahinda Samayawardhena to the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka.
The backlog of cases in Sri Lanka is a perennial problem and it has to be addressed urgently and quickly, methodically and efficiently and to deliver speedy justice and prevent Law delays without compromising the quality of justice, he said. ....

Colombo (News 1st); An independent judiciary is the corner of stone of the prevalence of the rule of law in a democratic society, said Attorney General Dappula De Livera on Wednesday (20) at a Ceremonial Sitting of the Supreme Court to welcome Justice Dileep Nawaz, Justice Kumuduni Wickramasinghe and Justice Shiran Gooneratne.
The credibility of a judicial system in a country is dependent on the Judges who man it, he said.
Judges must be people of impeccable integrity and unimpeachable independence, he said, adding a judge must discharge his judicial functions with high integrity, impartially and intellectual honesty said De Livera. ....

The effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on the functioning of the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court, were highlighted yesterday, at the Ceremonial Sitting to mark the Opening of the New Law Year 2021.
This Country’s Attorney General Jaundy Martin was among officials who addressed the ceremony, which was proceeded by a Virtual Church Service in Lucia. He spoke about some of the measures taken to address the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Meanwhile, Chief Justice, Dame Janice Pereira delivered the Feature Address with the theme “
the ECSC Managing the COVID-19 Quake”. She said the year 2020 can be described as the year of unimaginable disruptions an unplanned adjustments and uncertainties, brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic. ....
