Upon receipt of an RTI request for CCTV footage in a police station, the Public Information Officer concerned must preserve the CCTV footage until the RTI application and subsequent appeals are decided, the SIC added.
The Court directed the State to submit a comprehensive counter affidavit detailing the actions taken against the police personnel involved and the status of CCTV functionality in police station.
The Bombay High Court directed the contractors appointed by the Maharashtra government to file an undertaking setting out a short duration required to finish the installation of CCTV cameras inside police stations.
“Nothing is done and no orders of the High Court or Supreme Court have been followed. ‘Naam k vaaste’ (namesake) CCTVs are put", Bench led by Justice SJ Kathawalla told the State government.
The Bombay High Court expressed its dissatisfaction with the affidavit submitted by the Maharashtra government on the status of CCTVs in police stations across the State.
