2020 Year in Review by Graham Sleight

Graham Sleight (2015) by Francesca Myman
Publishing lead-times being what they are, the extraordinary events of 2020 largely weren’t reflected in the books that came out in the year – or at least, not intentionally. I managed to read a good deal of thought-provoking SF and fantasy this year, but some books seemed even more relevant than expected because of the pandemic-shuttered world they emerged into. How posterity will view them – let alone how it’ll view the books that’ll doubtless follow about COVID itself – is a question for another day.
Samit Basu’s
Chosen Spirits (Simon & Schuster India) offered a picture of India that was, its author insisted, both a dystopia and less bad than some alternatives. It certainly dug into the country’s culture and how it might change under the pressures bearing down on it. ....

Available Dark: Chills, in more than one sense of the word
Available Dark by Elizabeth Hand
It’s been a few months since the events of
Generation Loss, and Cass Neary, strapped for cash, has made a big mistake. In that previous book, she took pictures of someone’s death but told the police she wasn’t at the scene. She never meant to publish any of the photos. Whoops. So, with the police and the dead person’s son asking awkward questions, and Cass in need of money again, it seems like a great time to take a gig that will absent her from the country for a while. ....

Gary K. Wolfe Reviews The Best of Elizabeth Hand by Elizabeth Hand

I’ve always distrusted the notion of “comfort reading,” especially as it applies to our little corner of the swamp. After all, the very idea of horror fiction involves
discomfort, and SF characteristically challenges our sense of the stability of everything from nations to our bodies to the planet itself. I suppose fantasy does leave room for endless retellings of familiar tales with familiar heroes, but the most memorable fantasies are those which subvert and question that very familiarity, like Lavie Tidhar’s recent deconstruction of Arthuriana in
By Force Alone. But there’s another sort of comfort reading that has less to do with the tales than with the tellers, and no better examples can be found than two important new retrospective collections, ....

Generation Loss: A seductive brew of creepiness, melancholy, and weird religion | Fantasy Literature: Fantasy and Science Fiction Book and Audiobook Reviews

Generation Loss: A seductive brew of creepiness, melancholy, and weird religion
Generation Loss by Elizabeth Hand
Generation Loss (2007) is a Shirley Jackson Award winner and the first in
CASS NEARY thriller series. Cass is a washed-up, alcoholic photographer who was briefly famous in the 1970s for her images of the punk scene. Now middle-aged, she’s struggling, and a friend offers her a job interviewing another photographer, Aphrodite Kamestos, who had her own heyday in the 50s and 60s and now lives reclusively on a remote Maine island.
The job quickly proves to be harder than Cass expected. It’s much too cold for Cass’s New York wardrobe. The locals are aloof. People and cats have been mysteriously disappearing. And Aphrodite had no idea Cass was coming. Cass wants to leave, but circumstances keep her in Maine longer than she intended which positions her to solve the disappearances, if she can keep her own inner demons at least ....

CrimeFictionLover: Top five books of 2020

Isolation. Lockdown. Restrictions. Pandemic. Plandemic. Recession. You don’t need me to tell you that 2020 wasn’t a year brimming with positives. With the challenges we’ve all faced, it’s been difficult to enjoy the darker crime novels that I normally read in quite the same way, so I’ve read fewer books in 2020 than in any year since we started Crime Fiction Lover. Still, I was able to discover the American rural noir author Tom Bouman, as well as the new Icelandic writer Eva Björg Aegisdóttir, and picked up some great crime reads even though I went at a slower pace. ....
