The Best And Worst Of The Local Arts Scene In 1997.

ONE OF THE best moments in the whole art year took place
in its earliest weeks. Liz Lerman s Dance Exchange had come
to town in January, and worked intensively with local groups to
incorporate them into a professional performance at Centennial
Hall. After weeks of rehearsals, old Mexican-American women from
El Rio Neighborhood Center, Jewish mothers and children from the
Hebrew Academy, gay activists and even Ken Foster, head of
UApresents,
joined Lerman s troupe onstage for Still Crossing,
a dance about immigration and nationhood.
It was a performance at once solemn and joyful. Its best moment, ....

Maybe Mesa isn’t the first area that comes to mind when you think about the vibrant mural scene in metro Phoenix. But it’s actually home to dozens of works created by artists painting in distinct styles, which you can explore at your leisure during a self-guided tour that spans just over four miles. RAIL CDC and Bike Mesa created a map you can download before you head out, which includes 30 stops and works by more than 50 artists. Stay-at-Home Orders Inspire The Home Project – A Collaboration With On The Verge Theatre Festival

Mitra Cline’s “Transformation by Fire” is part video collage, part dance piece, performed by Brooklyn Snyder and inspired by wildfires.
Directors Kate Bergstrom, Josiah Davis, Sara Rademacher, Daniel Herrera and Daniel Andres Blanco worked over Zoom and via phone to adapt to COVID-19 circumstances, with Rademacher and Blanco spearheading the project as co-producers. The result is a new way for the community to collaborate, and a new direction for On the Verge.
The multimedia, multi-creator collaboration came in response to last year’s stay-at-home orders. With stages shuttered, the On the Verge Festival called upon area creators to develop works from a distance. The filmed works-in-progress are provocative, heartfelt and moving. ....
