and any outsider who is going to come in and say i m going to be different, i m not a politician, i m not going to make money, they are going to resonate with that electorate. but the problem for donald trump is, in a 17 candidate field, he can lead. but when that field starts to willow and it will even before you get to iowa. when it starts to winnow or six or four or five. 22% isn t going cut it. so that is his biggest challenge. as long as it s 17 candidates i think he ll be in a good position. but unless he can broaden his appeal to voters, he doesn t seem to have the growth potential to go beyond that. you were shaking your head. and the one thing that we ve consistently seen from donald trump is what he s promoting as, quote, his flexibility, not getting specific on policies. how long do you think that is going to last? when is he going to have to come out with specifics about some of
comes to voters in iowa, he s winning among women. you would think given what happened, he would be completely under water, most women would say, we don t even like him. not so much. if only i could make a quick point there. polling is a nonevent. it s a process. i expect we ll start to see a trend. he may not be paying a price just yet, but if this continues. then you will see that trend line go down. the other thing that s missing is another campaign has to jump in and start to take advantage of some of these missteps. nobody seems willing. that has not happened pp. in the absence of that, david, do you see donald trump just turning convention on its head? listen, he s been doing nothing but turning convention on its head this entire campaign process, we ve also been talking about, not just since the debate, but before. donald trump has some sort of ceiling of support. when you re dealing with a candidate field of 17 people.
i have not heard the bell just yet. you re all very well behaved. governor gilmore? i chaired homeland security committee for united states. we warned about the 9/11 attack before the 9/11 attack occurred. i was the governor during the 9/11 attack when the pentagon was struck. and i m going to tell you this. we need to use the benefit of our law enforcement people across this country, combined with our intelligence people across this country. we need to use our technological advantages. because what we ve warned of is an international guerilla movement that threatens this country. it s going to happen in this country. there are going to be further attacks. we have to be prepared to defend the american people, prepare them for a long war, stand up for the defense of this country, and stand up for the values of this country. thank you, governor. i ve got to move on to immigration here. senator santorum, you would argue you have one of the tougher positions on illegal immigration in
primary, there s always been an anti-establishment element in the republican party. usually it s 20 perks 25%right party. four years ago we saw that with michele bachmann herman cain newt gingrich. a rotating crop of people who moved to the top most of whom were anti-establishment. then it settles out because the candidate field starts to whittle and starts to become a one-on-one or one on two race. the anti-establishment candidate has a ceiling. donald trump has a ceiling. he is has a vociferous following within that ceiling but it s a relatively low ceiling. as somebody that wants a revitalized republican party in washington words reagan used in 74, he said it s not a third party we need a revitalized second party, i want the infusion of energy. are you then suggesting that that means it s inevitable that it s an establishment candidate that wins? well that s what history shows. you have to go back and show me a time. maybe ronald reagan. was he the ronald reagan was h
increasingly nervous. and i think speaking to thefy sure that chuck pointed out earlier, we re seeing the republican party lose ground. it s becoming more and more unstable. you see one sector getting strengthened by the anti-immigrant comments and the other sector scratching their head and saying we don t really want this extreme rhetoric, but what can we do. and chuck your thoughts on this? what about everybody else the moderates and others? six months ago i thought just look at the candidate field. you had marco rubio jeb bush two of the three most prominent front runners were going to be candidates that were going to go out of their way to reach out to the hispanic vote, to try to change the image of the party with hispanics. i think the damage has been done. i don t think what what s the setback that trump has created for the party is it
