App State Softball Suffers Opening Round Loss in Sun Belt Tournament Mary Pierce Barnes had the lone hit for the Mountaineers. photo courtesy of Appalachian State Athletics App State Softball Suffers Opening Round Loss in Sun Belt Tournament May 12, 2021 The App State softball team fell to South Alabama in the opening round of the 2021 Sun Belt Championship Wednesday afternoon by a score of 11-0 in five innings. The Jaguars move to 27-17 on the year, while the Mountaineers fall to 26-18. South Alabama struck first in the bottom of the second, hitting back-to-back singles to set up for a double by Bailey Welch to bring in the first two runs of the game. The third inning saw another Jaguar run, as Kennedy Cronan doubled to bring in Caroline Nichols who reached safely on a single. Mackenzie Brasher also attempted to score on the play but was thrown out at home. ....

The Mountaineers are now 26-17 and 8-12 in conference play. The Chanticleers move to 21-23, 9-15 in the Sun Belt. The final seeding for the 2021 Sun Belt Softball Tournament will be announced following the last regular season games on Saturday. Game 1 Coastal Carolina picked up where they left off in game one of the series, hitting four home runs in game two. The Chanticleers took the lead in the top of the third as Makiya Thomas brought in Taylor Sweigart on an RBI single. The lead went to 2-0 in the fourth as Mary Sobataka hit a sacrifice fly to left field to score Sydney Guess. ....

The Eagles (10-21, 3-10 SBC) took the first game 11-3 (6 inn.) and the Mountaineers (21-11, 5-6 SBC) bounced back to take game two 6-3. Game 1 The Eagles jumped out to an early lead, putting runners on first and third in the bottom of the first with a single, a Mountaineer error and a fielder’s choice. Janai Conklin stepped up to the plate and knocked a home run over the left field fence to give Georgia Southern a 3-0 lead. ....

Baylee Morton reached safely on a walk, followed by a bunt single from Kayt Houston. Morton was able to move to third on a throwing error by the second baseman. Mary Pierce Barnes then singled to bring in Morton and give the Mountaineers the 1-0 lead. ....

The Spartans bounced back in game two, notching their first win of the season with a 9-5 victory over the Mountaineers. Game 1 Both teams were held scoreless until the fourth inning as the Spartans struck first in the bottom half. Three hits and a throwing error from Caylie Kifer gave UNCG the lead heading into the fifth. ....
