Auckland school's pōhutukawa trees saved from the chop after local outcry

Caroline Williams/Stuff Signs and artwork in support of preserving the trees have been a common sight in the streets surrounding the school. “It’s not just a bunch of trees, there’s local, cultural and ecological issues that surround it. “We teach children to protect and look after the environment, this isn’t really setting them a good example.” STUFF Bright red pōhutukawa trees are a familiar sight come Christmas time in New Zealand. Yellow pōhutukawa trees, not so much. Parents also said the plan to remove the trees was hypocritical given the school emblem is a pōhutukawa blossom.
