Signs and artwork in support of preserving the trees have been a common sight in the streets surrounding the school.
“It’s not just a bunch of trees, there’s local, cultural and ecological issues that surround it.
“We teach children to protect and look after the environment, this isn’t really setting them a good example.”

Bright red pōhutukawa trees are a familiar sight come Christmas time in New Zealand. Yellow pōhutukawa trees, not so much.
Parents also said the plan to remove the trees was hypocritical given the school emblem is a pōhutukawa blossom.
