Parents protest saves Campbells Bay School pōhutukawa trees

A parents protest has saved five historic pōhutukawa trees that had been planned to be axed at Auckland s Campbells Bay School.
The school s board of trustees says the Ministry of Education has agreed to move a planned new classroom block 4.5 metres further back from Aberdeen Rd to leave the pōhutukawa intact.

Signs and artwork in support of preserving the trees have been a common sight in the streets surrounding the school. “It’s not just a bunch of trees, there’s local, cultural and ecological issues that surround it. “We teach children to protect and look after the environment, this isn’t really setting them a good example.”

Bright red pōhutukawa trees are a familiar sight come Christmas time in New Zealand. Yellow pōhutukawa trees, not so much. Parents also said the plan to remove the trees was hypocritical given the school emblem is a pōhutukawa blossom.

4th March zoom meeting with Save Campbells Bay School Trees
action group, Ministry of Education officials presented a
scheme for re-locating the school’s urgently-needed new
classroom block. The revised plan sets the building an
additional 4.5 metres back from the school’s road
boundary, leaving room for the main stand of five pohutukawa
to be retained following limited root reduction and
canopy trimming.
