That were shooting out of the top of the brick building. Reporter the flames shot more than 50 feet into the air. Thick plumes of smoke could be seen from the east bay. I saw thick billowing smoke right there. Reporter a firefighter had to be hospitalized for smoke inhalation. So did two neighbors. The fivealarm fire damaged two buildings but it was the wholesale store called big house, incorporated, that got the brunt of it. The shop was crowded with clothes and Leather Goods and other assorted imported items. In fact, so crowded, the city has investigated them twice for being a fire hazard in the past. Both times, the store management cleaned up the store before they got fined. Because of so much fuel inside the building a lot of the fire is deep seated so we have to keep water on it overnight. Back in their homes. The fire broke out on the third floor at about 4 30 a. M. And it was tough for firefighters to reach. They had to run hoses about 400 feet through a courtyard. Neighbors say they grabbed fire extinguishers and were trying to help put it out themselves. Again, some neighbors that i spoke with say that a person may have left a candle unattended although the fire is still under investigation. There was damage to that original unit and we spoke with one man who lives next door. We were sleeping, and then we just heard screaming, uhm, couple of girls screaming next door. We werent sure what it was. Then we came out and we saw the smoke belching out of their apartment. Reporter certainly a scary morning for these people. But nobody injured. Had to leave. Lets go. Reporter it was very chaotic. We were doing the interview, we were told they had to leave they evacuated one side of the block between 23rd and 22nd on mission. All those stores are closed. They contained most of the damage to that one building. It was called big house. There was some damage to a building next door. It was so bad at one time firefighters pulled out because they feared that the roof could collapse. They pulled out and then half hour later the roof in fact did collapse and about an hour after that, the second floor collapsed. And thats why they are so fearful that the building could come down on its own. They have a no go zone around the building right now between 22nd and 23rd. Allen .
