Calloway County Prepares For Bicentennial Celebration In 2022

Community leaders and county officials gathered on Tuesday to announce plans for a celebration of Calloway County’s bicentennial in 2022.
The Calloway Fiscal Court will be working in conjunction with Murray Independent Schools and Murray State University, who are also celebrating anniversaries in 2022. Murray Independent Schools is celebrating 150 years, and Murray State will celebrate its centennial.
Judge-Executive Kenny Imes said next year’s celebration will look back on the county’s 200 year history and highlight how the county started, how it grew, and how the community hopes to move forward from present day. After a tumultuous summer of protests in 2020 surrounding demands to remove a Confederate statue on the court square in Murray, Imes said he wants the events of the bicentennial to bring the community together. ....

Murray Residents Calling For Confederate Monument Removal Donate Books To Library

Murray residents calling for removal of a local Confederate monument donated books to their county library and other “little free” libraries throughout the city on Saturday in an effort to engage and give back to their community. The donations followed a “week of action” organized by these residents centered around the past Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.
Rikki Neal and her two toddlers brought dozens of books into Calloway County Public Library, most of them children’s books featuring multicultural stories and history, including the book, “I Promise” by basketball star LeBron James. Neal said her husband, Sherman, helped fundraise about $1,500 in the community to buy more than 100 books in total. Advocates hope the books help community members gain perspective and awareness on diverse experiences. ....
