Community leaders and county officials gathered on Tuesday to announce plans for a celebration of Calloway County’s bicentennial in 2022.
The Calloway Fiscal Court will be working in conjunction with Murray Independent Schools and Murray State University, who are also celebrating anniversaries in 2022. Murray Independent Schools is celebrating 150 years, and Murray State will celebrate its centennial.
Judge-Executive Kenny Imes said next year’s celebration will look back on the county’s 200 year history and highlight how the county started, how it grew, and how the community hopes to move forward from present day. After a tumultuous summer of protests in 2020 surrounding demands to remove a Confederate statue on the court square in Murray, Imes said he wants the events of the bicentennial to bring the community together.

MURRAY â At its final meeting of the year, the Calloway County Fiscal Court on Wednesday approved the 2021 budgets for the county clerkâs and sheriffâs offices, as well as voting to purchase a new truck for the road department.
Before passing next yearâs budget for the Calloway County Sheriffâs Office, the court approved the amended 2020 budget to account for Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act funds that were received. The court also approved a change for the 2020 maximum amount the sheriff could expend from fees for deputies, assistants and other employees. That amount includes overtime, vacations, holiday pay and any other personnel expenditures. It was previously set at $1.3 million, and Sheriff Nicky Knight asked the court to increase that amount to $1.46 million.
MURRAY â Probably no one was surprised Thursday when it came to the annual City/County Meeting of Murray-Calloway County Hospital and the main topic of discussion.
With the COVID-19 pandemic having brought fear and uncertainty to not just citizens but especially health care facilities this year, the coronavirus was certain to have a large place in this meeting with the members of the Murray City Council and Calloway County Fiscal Court. The hospitalâs role in combatting the virus has been extensive since it arrived in March, but hospital CEO Jerry Penner said that pace has exploded since about August when the number of patients began increasing dramatically.
