The Calcutta High Court has issued 'rule nisi' against the West Bengal State Election Commission (SEC) on petitions accusing it of contempt of court over its conduct during the panchayat polls.
"If the elected reserved category candidate is not allowed the benefit of reservation, then the reservation policy will be frustrated," the Calcutta High Court said.
Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury had moved an urgent motion before the High Court highlighting the rampant violence that broke out across West Bengal on polling day.
The case before Calcutta High Court concerns allegations that a voter's right to choose is being violated as only ruling party candidates contested in 274 seats part of the West Bengal panchayat elections.
