Twist review – Sky’s Dickens update is not so Artful James City A.M. s film editor and a regular on both TV and radio discussing the latest movie releases Like Dracula and Sherlock Holmes, Oliver Twist is a character that seems to have been reimagined a number of ways over the years on the big screen. As well as the standard dramatisations of Dickens’ classic, there’s the beloved 60s musical Oliver!; animated hit Oliver & Company; and, er, a version set in the New York drag scene titled Twisted. Sky’s new interpretation, Twist, looks to distinguish itself from the pack with some modern embellishments. ....

Now he is Fagin in this try-hard modern reboot of Oliver Twist, in which the plot and indeed meaning of the original has been jettisoned, leaving few of the characters â though the originalâs tiny, sticky-fingered tealeaves are now promoted to supercool young adulthood. It never really comes to life and thereâs a kids-TV feel to most of it, although the free-running scenes are watchable enough, and Caineâs disguise as a grumpy Russian plutocrat with a fake moustache raises some laughs. ....
