Campaigners urge people to oppose Buttington incinerator plan

A campaign group has urged people to object to a waste incinerator site they claim would be hugely damaging if it is allowed to be built near Welshpool.
Buttington Incinerator Impact Group (BiIG) is concerned that allowing the large industrial waste incinerator at Buttington Quarry will cause issues in the local area such as health problems for children and residents.
Plans for the incinerator were submitted to Welsh Government planners last month by Broad Energy Wales, who say the incinerator would play a vital part in helping the government achieve its net-zero carbon ambition.
Campaigners have been out doing door-to-door leaflet drops and driving around Welshpool with banners in an attempt to get residents to make their voices heard before the deadline for objections closes on Monday, May 24. ....

Buttington incinerator plans uncertain after Welsh Government moratorium stance

THE Welsh Government has confirmed it wants to impose a moratorium on new incinerators after Labour’s election victory – leaving fresh questions over plans for a waste site at Buttington.
A government spokesman confirmed it will be working to implement a moratorium on new incinerator developments, in line with the party s manifesto commitments.
Plans for the incinerator were submitted to Welsh Government planners last month by Broad Energy Wales, and have since been met with disapproval from residents in the area of Buttington.
Despite the Welsh Government outlining its intentions to suspend similar developments, CEO of Broad Energy Wales, Alistair Hilditch-Brown, believes the incinerator would play a vital part in helping the government achieve its net-zero carbon ambitions. ....

Pushchair protest sends stark warning about incinerator

A CHILD’S pushchair with a stark warning about protecting the health of babies and children has been chained to a lamppost outside Buttington Trewern County Primary School, near the site of the proposed Buttington Incinerator.
It is the latest protest by the Newtown and Welshpool branch of Extinction Rebellion (XR), as part of the group’s nationwide action called ‘Children s Futures’. The pushchair was left at the school on Saturday, December 12, to highlight the effect of air pollution on children, both directly and through worsening effects of climate breakdown. It will be removed on December 20.
According to the group, babies in the most polluted areas of the UK have a 30-50 per cent higher risk of dying before their first birthday. And XR Newtown & Welshpool are calling on local residents to challenge their Members of the Senedd to stand against the incinerator and also to support their ‘Six Principles’ campaign. ....
