A campaign group has urged people to object to a waste incinerator site they claim would be hugely damaging if it is allowed to be built near Welshpool. Buttington Incinerator Impact Group (BiIG) is concerned that allowing the large industrial waste incinerator at Buttington Quarry will cause issues in the local area such as health problems for children and residents. Plans for the incinerator were submitted to Welsh Government planners last month by Broad Energy Wales, who say the incinerator would play a vital part in helping the government achieve its net-zero carbon ambition. Campaigners have been out doing door-to-door leaflet drops and driving around Welshpool with banners in an attempt to get residents to make their voices heard before the deadline for objections closes on Monday, May 24. ....

A government spokesman confirmed it will be working to implement a moratorium on new incinerator developments, in line with the party s manifesto commitments. Plans for the incinerator were submitted to Welsh Government planners last month by Broad Energy Wales, and have since been met with disapproval from residents in the area of Buttington. Despite the Welsh Government outlining its intentions to suspend similar developments, CEO of Broad Energy Wales, Alistair Hilditch-Brown, believes the incinerator would play a vital part in helping the government achieve its net-zero carbon ambitions. ....

PLANS for a waste incinerator outside Welshpool are set to go out to public viewing this week after the proposals were submitted to the Welsh Government. An official application for the Energy Recovery Facility (ERF) project in Buttington was lodged by developers Broad Energy (Wales) Limited, which has submitted its application for the ERF to the Planning Inspectorate following a lengthy period that has included public consultation, evidence gathering and research. It is thought the scheme will create 300 jobs during its construction phase and will employ 30 members of permanent staff once fully operational. However, because of its energy-generating capacity – in excess of 10MWe – the Buttington ERF application is considered a development of national significance, which are determined by Welsh Ministers. ....
