investigations and litigation around issues like the incarceration of juveniles with adults in adult prisons or the efforts to give tax exempt status to private segregated academies so they didn t have to pay taxes. issues like that. expanding childcare, getting better conditions for migrant workers. that s the kind of work we were doing. and that s what i started doing when i graduated and went right to cambridge to work for her. please tell us about the call from john. this is a very funny series of actions. i was down visiting bill in arkansas right around christmas. and bill s phone rang and he got a call from john door. and john door said, i ve been asked to put together a team of lawyers for the house judiciary committee to investigate whether there are grounds for impeachment of president nixon and i have a list of people that i m going over with and you re at the top of the list if you would like to come to work. and bill said, well, actually, i m going to run for
nomination. timothy: hi, i m timothy naftali, director of the richard museum, yorba linda, california. i have the honor and privilege weld interviewing william in new york city for the richard nixon oral history program. mr. weld, thank you for joining us today. please tell us how you came to be involved with the inquiry? a call in the fall of 1973. i was an associate at a law firm asking me if i d be interested in interviewing for a job on the impeachment staff. point it really hadn t gotten off the ground. i said, no, i have to stay here i make partner and then i called the guy back 15 seconds made aaving realized i dreadful mistake and i said can i still interview for it and he had a telephone interview with sam garrison who was running the republican side was not yet who fully unified. some thought it never was. went down and had a good interview with sam and i was in shortlycome thereafter and reported for duty in december of 1973. timothy: tell me a little bit about, fi
united states senate play far too many games with a piece of legislation critical to the national security of the united states and civil liberties of the american people. we start the hour with nbc s luke russert on the hill. luke, what is in these changes that the house really objects to here. reporter: well what they say is on may 13th they passed a bill usa freedom act with 338 votes that was overwhelmingly bipartisan. this came after months much painstaking negotiations and the senate has no right to do away with the legs lagz because they screwed up. rand paul called his bluff and mitch mcconnell got left with nothing to show for it. the issue really at hand and hear this from republicans privately, mcconnell was working on trade legislation before the memorial day recess he knew where we stood and how the heck are we backing down from legislation that had 338 supporters. now there s an interesting question the first amendment mcconnell put forward it just went down
