Boosting North Carolina’s literacy rate: North Carolina lawmakers are working on a bill to give more help to some elementary school teachers.
Lawmakers are considering House Bill 420, which would put a teacher assistant in every kindergarten through second grade classroom in North Carolina and one in every three third grade classrooms.
Representative Brian Turner said the bill could help lagging reading numbers in North Carolina.
“I do know we have some room for improvement,” Turner said.

“She learns better at school,” her mother, Cherylin Hurley, added. “They need to be in school. Safety has to be the first thing, but if grocery stores can open and other things can open, why not schools?”
At a press conference Tuesday, Gov. Roy Cooper agreed.
“We’ve learned much more about this virus, and now it’s time to get our children back into the classroom,” he said. ....
