While they pull in state and local law enforce Law Enforcement officers was a great support for local Law Enforcement. Targeted have, very efforts, mikulskis efforts. Murkowski actually, of alaska. I think Barbara Mikulski also so we have a good team. The last thing i wanted to mention, i wont ask a question. Im out of time, just on opioid bill and we know how important that is. Over 146 officer fatalities per year. That is a shocking number. One officer killed somewhere in america every 60 hours. All right. But the good news is that numbers are going down. If you go back to the 1970s we were averaging 231 officers killed in the line of duty each and every year. That means the 146 number i cited is 37 lower than it was 40 years ago. That is at a time we have double number of officers serving and putting themselves at risk. Would you have expected that number would have gone up, not down. There are a number of factors that are responsible for that and i have enumerated some of them in my written testimony. I want to just spend a moment though reemphasizing the leadership that the attorney general of the United States eric holder, has focused on issue of officer safety and wellness. Im not sure he is getting enough credit for his leadership. Just a few years ago, when deaths were spiking, 171 officers killed ....

Described it as substantial, security at the consolate that day. What was the basis for that . Did anybody give her information that the consolate that day, security was significant, substantial and strong . Because there was absolutely no evidence of that. In fact, everything found in this investigation has shown that security was absolutely lax at that consolate, unacceptably so given the prior history of intelligence at the consolate, given the prior attacks that had been made not only on the british, on the red cross. And this really was unfortunately a death trap. And so why is she then, in the context of an election not only pushing the video story the president as well but also saying the consulate security is strong, it was significant when there is no evidence of that. In fact, it all goes to the contrary. Finally, you know, theres been a lot of discussion about the fact that the about the video. Ambassador rice went on the sunday shows. She talks about the video. She talks ab ....
Can have some confidence that the security being provided at those last points of departure to the u. S. Are similar to ours. So we believe that we have the best security in the world. It is the gold standard, and thats why terrorists have looked elsewhere. Ill just highlight three incidents in the last three years that demonstrate, unfortunately, the dedication of the terrorists, particularly alqaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, the lengths they will go to to try to blow up a u. S. Bound airliner. So we just go back to Christmas Day three years ago which youre all familiar with, with the young knew gene man nigerian man who was given a bomb with no metal in it. Thats the reason we have the advanced Imaging Technology here in the u. S. , body scanners as theyre referred to sometimes. Because those enable us to pick up ....
