It doesn t happen often, but every now and then a Major League umpire apologizes for his behavior.
You may remember Jim Joyce. On June 2, 2010, he called a runner safe at first base, with 2 out in the ninth inning, to deprive Tigers pitcher Armando Galarraga of a perfect game.
After the game ended, Joyce immediately asked to speak with Galarraga.
The 28-year-old Venezuelan was brought to the umpires room,. Before Joyce could say a word, Galarraga hugged him and said, We are all human.
Joyce, crying, apologized to Galarraga in English and in Spanish. ....

Talk about rubbing salt on an open wound!
Some guy from Los Angeles has rented a billboard right across the street from Fenway Park that says, Dear Boston, thanks for Mookie Betts. The perpetrator of the outrage then had the audacity to claim that he meant no harm as he carefully removed the dagger from our spleen. It s not enough to say that the billboard has interrupted our healing process. We re not even through grieving yet.
A friend of mine who is a Red Sox devotee which is to say a fellow mourner recently fulminated that the Mookie trade to the Dodgers was at least as bad, and probably worse, than the sale of Babe Ruth to the Yankees that took place more than a century ago. And we re still not over that one. ....

It took six pitchers, 10 innings and a sacrifice fly by a .042-hitting shortstop in the bottom of the ninth, but on Wednesday afternoon, it finally happened: the Oakland A’s won a game.

In storming back to beat Los Angeles, the A’s improved their 2021 record to 1-6 and avoided making history with the first 0-7 start in the 121-year history of the franchise. Their 0-6 start was the team’s worst since 1916 when they were in Philadelphia. That team, managed by Hall of Famer Connie Mack, was led by first baseman Stuffy McGinnis and had a pitcher named Bullet Joe Bush. ....
