Premier Oscar Mabuyane’s state of the province address got off to a bumpy start at the Christian Centre in Abbotsford, East London, on Thursday when a fight broke out between EFF MPLs and the Eastern Cape legislature’s security detail.EFF MPLs had initially raised their hands, moments before Mabuyane was to begin with his address, to put forward a motion about the plight of tertiary students who have been protesting in East London.
The Makhanda high court has granted Buffalo City TVET College (BCC) an interim interdict against protesting students who allegedly caused disruptions at the college campuses.
A Special Investigating Unit investigation has revealed that the National Students Financial Aid Scheme incorrectly funded 3,842 Eastern Cape students by a whopping R597.8m between 2018 and 2021.Of the 12 universities and TVET colleges in the province, Walter Sisulu University was cited as one of the institutions with the largest number of undue beneficiaries.
The lights came back on across large parts of East London at just after 2pm on Tuesday after an unprecedented 40-hour-long power outage that crippled industry, left residents in the dark, and cost untold amounts in lost revenue, production and spoilt food.But minutes after the power was restored, some residents complained it went off immediately, apparently due a combination of scheduled load-shedding and other unscheduled faults.
