People in our districts, both republicans and democrats, that we want to see action. we want to see you guys sit down, spend some time together and talk through things. and in order for that to happen, there has to be a basic level of respect, sincere discussion, listening and consideration. and there will be things, of course, we disagree on but there will be things we can agree on and that s really where the opportunity i see that lies ahead. but congressman, i would gather on some of this budget talk, particularly well, let me ask it this way. is there any any ratio of spending cuts to tax increases that you could accept or vote for? well, the president got over $600 billion worth of taxes at the beginning of this year. we know that this town has a spending problem. we re going to have record revenues in 2013, as the economics have already shown, the economists have already shown. so the bottom line is this, what can we do to bring spending under control? we ve spent it, we ....
I really see great opportunity here for a few reasons. one is because you don t have these kind of created crises that are constantly happening. it creates an opportunity for those of us who have come here with a very clear mandate from people in our districts, both republicans and democrats, that we want to see action. we want to see you guys sit down, spend some time together, and talk through things. and in order for that to happen, there has to be a basic level of respect, sincere discussion, listening, and consideration. and there will be things, of course, we ll disagree on, but there will be things we can agree on, and that s really where the opportunity i see that lies ahead. but, congressman, i would gather on some of this budget talk, particularly well, let me ask it this way. is there any any ratio of spending cuts to tax increases that you could accept or vote for? well, the president got over $600 billion worth of taxes at the beginning of this year. we know that t ....
Fatigue with all of this budget talk now. first, it s a key. people to a large degree have tuned out. the effect won t be felt on march 1st except for those of us who try to generate all kinds of controversy, but it s going to be something that will happen fairly quickly and one of those things where the agency, first of all, start furloughing workers. that will cut pay scales by 20%. this sequester came out of the debt ceiling crisis out of 2011. it was pushed back to march from january. it goes on and on. is this how congress is doing business now, they re putting everything off? that s the best result that we can expect these days. congress seems to get us in one mess or another. and then they go off on vacation like they have right now which is a regular thing in congress ....
Floor. it might sound like budget talk, but this is our nation s defense spending going back to world war ii. here s president obama s plan for military spending for the next decade. here is what romney wants to do. he proposes to give the military $2 trillion more than they are asking for. governor romney has not said what he wants to do with that money. he wants to add soldiers and build ships faster, but that doesn t get a price tag. it s hard to say what his vision is exactly. and frankly, it got harder this week. the former romney adviser contested that number saying the goal of 4% of gdp remains and is unchanged but that goal is not going to be achieved overnight. so so much for budget clarity. this is kind of a common issue with the romney campaign. the more you pin down the number, more they can t give you the number, but they tell you ....
Together with republicans and democrats in congress. oh, okay. so, he s prepared to layout half a piece of legislation which is i will cut all tax rates by 20%. there s another half of the legislation which i must not speak of. right. then why mention that other half? why mention the 20% half if you can t mention the deductions half? we have never seen this in a campaign proposal before. i think he thinks that this will still be a referendum election. one could oorg u that the debate proved part of his point. big bird speaks to the total of their budget talk because they can t point to anything significant that they would cut. but on the other hand it will be up to a lot of the debates in the future, especially joe biden to get out there and say this is ....
