budget problems in the future. nonetheless, earlier today all involved admit there is a big budget problem right now for the city that could lead to new safety concerns for its residents. yes, mr. mayor. reporter: the city san jose is facing a $115 million budget deficit and once again police and fire departments are among the agencies facing cuts. for the police depend, the one-year detente with the city is ending and san jose is looking at its first round ever of officer layoffs. this level of potential cuts is truly devastating for the police department. if there is no negotiated agreement we re looking at laying off over 260 of our sworn personnel, along with some vacancies we have that results in roughly 351 cuts. reporter: the city s fire department is also looking at layoffs. like last year, they say residents could feel it. we have firefighters and we need them now. reducing the number of firefighters on duty will further impact our ability to further ....
