WWII veteran Gene Johnson, a coach for nearly six decades in the county, dies at 94 [Santa Cruz Sentinel, Calif.]
Jan. 17 WATSONVILLE Gene Johnson, a World War II veteran who coached nearly six decades in Santa Cruz County, passed away Thursday, two days shy of his 95th birthday.
He spent the last 1 1/2 years at Valley Convalescent Hospital with his wife, Doris. Both COVID-19 survivors, they celebrated their 73rd anniversary at the nursing home.
Robert Johnson said his father cherished athletics because it provided him a platform to teach life lessons. Johnson is also survived by his daughter, Kim Carolan, and five grandchildren. ....

'Warm line' steps up efforts in county during pandemic

As the impact of the COVID-19 virus affects more and more families in Crawford County, Peace4Crawford and Women’s Service’s Inc. are stepping up efforts to assure that families can get help when needed through its county-wide telephone “warm line.”
“As this pandemic and the associated social isolation and economic challenges have stretched out over the past 10 months, people’s resilience and capacity to cope is wearing thin, said Bruce Harlan, executive director of Women’s Services. We see this in the increased number of families who are coping with domestic violence, and also families who have short-term needs for food assistance or mental health support. While Women’s Services alone cannot meet all of those needs, we can connect people to services and others who can.” ....
