The Salt Lake City Public Library system is back up and running after a long year of closures and curbside services. In an interview with
City Weekly, Glendale Library branch manager Brooke Young describes how these important community resources are getting back to the old way of doing things but will keep some new tricks they ve learned during the coronavirus pandemic. This interview has been edited for length and clarity.
Benjamin Wood: When did the Glendale branch reopen?
Brooke Young: We did a trial run in late August/September of 2020 but then [COVID-19] cases got really high again, so we shut back down. We officially opened back up on March 15, [2021], which is exactly a year from when we closed.

ASHLAND When Brooke Young was growing up, she found some of her most meaningful relationships were formed in nursing homes.
Those facilities aren’t the kinds of places you often see the youngest generation. Young would like to change that.
The Ashland University senior has made intergenerational interactions her platform as she prepares for the Miss Ohio pageant in June. But she’s also made it the theme of her children’s book, “Murray’s Miraculous Mission,” which is available for pre-order now and scheduled for a wide release in February.
The mission of the “Mission” is to recount some of the experiences Young had during the five years she spent in nursing facilities with her therapy dog, Molly, a golden retriever she worked with her grandfather to train. “The memories are very close to my heart,” Young said, adding that the book is dedicated to the memory of her grandfather Larry Volz, who died in 2018.
MANSFIELD â Some of Brooke Youngâs fondest childhood memories were formed in an unexpected place a local nursing home.
At Oak Grove Manor, Young learned the value of serving others, bringing joy and forming relationships that span generations.
Now an adult, she hopes to pass on those values to the next generation of children through a heartfelt retelling of her precious memories.Â
