New nonprofit boosts Research4Life's mission in lower- and middle-income countries

Wilmington, DC, April 22, 2021 - Friends of Research4Life, a new 501(c)(3) nonprofit based in the United States, was launched to support the critical mission of the Research4Life partnership to enable full participation in the global information environment. Organizations and individuals can now make contributions that directly benefit Research4Life programs.
The United Nations Agenda for Sustainable Development clarifies that knowledge and education drive development and are inextricably linked to a sustainable future. Research4Life aims to minimize technical and commercial barriers to information access by providing institutions in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), areas and territories with academic and professional peer-reviewed content. It is a partnership of United Nations agencies, Cornell and Yale Universities, STM and more than 180 international publishers. ....

AI Algorithm Identifies Individual Dead Sea Scroll Scribes


An article in 
New Scientist  explains that researchers traditionally hunted for specific “traits in the styles of letters to help identify different scribes.” However, Professor Popović said this type of identification method is “somewhat subjective and often hotly debated.”
The trouble is every pair of human eyes interprets tiny twists and turns differently, and traditional methods of grouping as such have been prone to great inaccuracies and contrasting interpretations.

ABU DHABI, 22nd April, 2021 (WAM) Under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, the Sheikh Zayed Book Award has announced the winners of its 15th edition, the largest in its history in terms of submissions.

The write stuff: new analysis on Dead Sea Scrolls sheds light on the scribes behind them

Written over 2,000 years ago, the Dead Sea Scrolls bear the earliest known manuscripts of the Hebrew Bible, but details about the scribes who made them have remained elusive. Now, researchers have discovered that more than one scribe could work on a scroll, providing a rare insight into the lives of the individuals behind these important documents.
Two 12x12 Kohonen blue colourmaps of full character aleph and bet from the Dead Sea Scroll collection. Each of the characters in the Kohonen maps is formed from multiple instances of similar characters (shown in box). These maps are useful for chronological style development analysis. In the study of writer identification, fragmented character shapes were used to achieve more precise results ....
