NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WTVF) — Homeless advocates are calling for better solutions after more than 40 people with COVID-19 are quarantining at an old jail facility.
The residents were previously living at the Nashville Rescue Mission, but officials said they don t have enough room for them to safely quarantine on campus. Officials estimated 40 to 60 residents are currently at the old Core Civic facility on Harding Place. Mission officials said they have reduced space because they are currently building a brand new campus for women and children experiencing homelessness, and those currently staying at the women’s campus are being temporarily relocated to their location on Lafayette Street. ....

Tennessee vaccination outreach to minors halted, not just for COVID-19

The Tennessee Department of Health will halt all adolescent vaccine outreach – not just for coronavirus, but all diseases – amid pressure from Republican state lawmakers, according to an internal report and agency emails obtained by the Tennessean. If the health department must issue any information about vaccines, staff are instructed to strip the agency logo off the documents.
The health department will also stop all COVID-19 vaccine events on school property, despite holding at least one such event this month. The decisions to end vaccine outreach and school events come directly from Health Commissioner Dr. Lisa Piercey, the internal report states. ....

As COVID-19 raged, to whom did Tennessee go for help? Michelle Fiscus.

Nashville Tennessean
It was Feb. 17, and the worst winter storm in years blanketed much of Tennessee in a foreboding shell of ice and snow. Roads were buried. Visibility was terrible. Most businesses were shuttered.

Dr. Alex Jahangir, the head of Nashville’s coronavirus task force, was doing just that, riding out the weather on his couch. His phone rang.
Fiscus explained at least 100 doses of COVID-19 vaccine in Williamson County were thawed before the worsening storm cancelled vaccination appointments for the day. The doses now were at risk of expiring, Fiscus said, but if they acted quickly no vaccine would go to waste. ....
