Distracted driver who killed cyclist gets licence back

Last week Wong’s lawyer Chris Nicholls made an application for a limited driver licence for his client at the same court where he was sentenced. Police opposed the application.
The case had been due to be heard on Thursday but was delayed after the presiding judge, Judge Arthur Tompkins, said he was unable to make a decision, because he had cycled the exact route on which Norriss was killed on numerous occasions and the behaviour of drivers on the road had given him cause for concern, though this was “nothing to do with this defendant”.
“I would not feel appropriately neutral,” he said before standing down the case, so it could be heard by another judge. ....

A texting driver who killed a Wellington cyclist has had his application for a limited licence put off by the judge - who is a keen cyclist himself.

Bex McLean and Darryl Norriss are running the mountain leg of Coast to Coast in memory of their father, Brent Norriss, who was killed by a distracted driver while riding his bike in February 2020.
Canterbury grandad Brent Norriss was cycling home from his work in Wellington when he was hit and killed by a driver who was distracted by his cellphone.
The 65-year-old – who was affectionately described as a “fit old bugger” – completed the Coast to Coast five times and was looking forward to entering again in 2021.
But following his death on February 3, 2020, his children – Bex McLean and Darryl Norriss – vowed to run the gruelling Coast to Coast Mountain Run in is memory. ....

Nearly a year to the day after cyclist Brent Norriss was hit and killed by a car on State Highway 2 as he travelled home from Wellington to the Hutt Valley, the long-awaited $130 million shared pathway linking Petone with Ngauranga has been fast-tracked.
The announcement on Friday that construction on the 5 metre-wide cycle and walkway, stretching 4.5 kilometres along the coast next to the Hutt Valley Railway Line and the highway, could begin midway through this year has been welcomed by active transport advocates.
As well as making the commute between the central city and Lower Hutt easier and safer, it is hoped the cycle and walkway could draw more international tourists to the Wellington region after the Covid-19 pandemic. ....
