Siblings running in memory of their dad who was killed by a distracted driver

Bex McLean and Darryl Norriss are running the mountain leg of Coast to Coast in memory of their father, Brent Norriss, who was killed by a distracted driver while riding his bike in February 2020.
Canterbury grandad Brent Norriss was cycling home from his work in Wellington when he was hit and killed by a driver who was distracted by his cellphone.
The 65-year-old – who was affectionately described as a “fit old bugger” – completed the Coast to Coast five times and was looking forward to entering again in 2021.
But following his death on February 3, 2020, his children – Bex McLean and Darryl Norriss – vowed to run the gruelling Coast to Coast Mountain Run in is memory. ....

Construction to begin on Petone cycleway this year, thanks to fast-track approval

“This project will create jobs and boost our economic recovery while maintaining a strong environmental focus. Care will be taken to preserve sensitive habitats and the addition of new offshore habitat areas will help address the effects of coastal construction,” Parker said.
“It meets all the requirements under the fast-track consenting process to get people into jobs and support our economy, while upholding environmental standards and Treaty of Waitangi principles,” he said.

Plans for the fast tracked Ngauranga to Petone cycleway have been released by Waka Kotahi NZTA.
Transport Minister Michael Wood said the new path would encourage more people to cycle between the Hutt Valley and Wellington City. ....

Ambitious Ngauranga to Petone shared pathway 'a win for all Wellingtonians'

The Ngauranga-to-Petone shared pathway project has been fast-tracked. First published September 2019.
Nearly a year to the day after cyclist Brent Norriss was hit and killed by a car on State Highway 2 as he travelled home from Wellington to the Hutt Valley, the long-awaited $130 million shared pathway linking Petone with Ngauranga has been fast-tracked.
The announcement on Friday that construction on the 5 metre-wide cycle and walkway, stretching 4.5 kilometres along the coast next to the Hutt Valley Railway Line and the highway, could begin midway through this year has been welcomed by active transport advocates.
As well as making the commute between the central city and Lower Hutt easier and safer, it is hoped the cycle and walkway could draw more international tourists to the Wellington region after the Covid-19 pandemic. ....
