This is back when there was a lot of attention this summer, the house version of this legislation passed, had a lots of support, passed in july. you expected it to pass with unanimous consent in the senate. now people aren t paying attention, the media s not paying attention as much as they were. were you surprised when senator demint blocked it? i was surprised. first of all, although the bill that we got through the house was very wide ranging and broad and made the death on the high seas act fair for everybody, the bill, because of the interests of special interest influence has been reduced now to providing more adequate damages only for the victims of the deepwater horizon. it won t affect anything in our american judicial system that senator demint s so worried about, other than just these claims by these 11 families. so i was surprised when he objected. no one in his on his staff had every indicated my son ....
And do something very aggressive, the worst thing you can do right now is tread heavily on this marsh grass. so this is a test of patience. reporter: talk about patience, we all want it. the people living here may be out of it. well, we re not done yet. reporter: and they tell me they re going to be here as long as it takes, and employing people as long as it takes as well. but they don t nearly employ as much. those people that were employed to clean up the bp spill, they are not so employed now. the amount of commercial fishing area the gulf that was closed has shrunk dramatically, down to 16,000 square miles really out by the wellhead where they are cleaning off some of that equipment. all of the testing of fish for consumption has come back negative. the hope is that the fishing industry bounces back as well and so does the economy and we re hoping that the stalks of green grass take root as well ....
That s laughed at environmental standards and laughed at regulation, they continue to do it, and they want no transparency. the federal government needs to be check out bp. they are chronic liars and we have to now make sure that that pipeline is safe, it s that simple. doug, i mean, just to play devil s advocate, there haven t been any major accidents there. there have been little spills and little accidents. big spill, bp, corrosive pipes, spilled oil over the tundra, anyone can pull it up online that s watching, it s the worst disaster in north slope history, the 2006 bp spill, because they didn t properly maintenance anything. other companies are operating in alaska and not having that kind of spill problem that bp had. and so what happened to those pipes could happen here, i m not raising an alarm about this, i think why not inspect all 12 ....
