Battling cancer, Kapayan rep Lasimbang pens Kaamatan song to inspire Sabah's indigenous folk


KOTA KINABALU: Sabah s Kapayan assemblyman Jannie Lasimbang is battling cancer but that has not stopped her from joining local singers and performing for the Kaamatan festivities.
Known for her decades of grassroots work with indigenous people in Sabah, Lasimbang said she wrote the lyrics for the song Sunduvan Kaamatan Aiso Vohit (Spirit of a Borderless Kaamatan) as she wants the communities to remain upbeat and stick to their goals.
Though there will be no celebrations to mark Kaamatan on May 30 and 31 this year, due to Covid-19 SOPs under the movement control order, she hoped the song will bring cheer and remind people that the Kaamatan spirit remains in the hearts of all indigenous people. ....

Age-old ritual celebrated virtually

KOTA KINABALU: The magavau (or calling of padi spirits) which saw native Kadazandusun priestesses called bobohizans or bobolians chanting and performing the age-old ritual kick-started Sabah’s month-long Kaamatan festival.
This is an annual ritual performed to honour the padi spirit besides expressing hopes for a bountiful harvest.
The ritual yesterday saw nine priestesses sitting around an array of food and drinks that were prepared for the spirits.
The priestesses chanted and sang before they stood up and walked in circles, continuing with their chants, among other activities.
Prior to that, a symbolic padi harvesting was performed by invited guests on stage, where seven stalks of carefully selected padi kept in pots were harvested. ....

Month-long Kaamatan festival starts in Sabah with virtual launch

KOTA KINABALU: The age-old Magavau (calling of paddy spirits) ritual kick-started The Kaamatan festival here on Saturday (May 1) after a symbolic paddy harvesting was performed by invited guests on stage.
The launching of this year s harvest festival was held virtually from the Hongkod Koisaan Hall at the Kadazandusun Cultural Association building (KDCA), after a year of hiatus and called for celebrants to preserve and practise unity.
Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Seri Dr Jeffrey Kitingan, who officiated at the event, said although the festival could only be launched virtually without the accompanying bazaars and exhibitions like past years, the spirit of Kaamatan was still felt. ....

Sabah Kaamatan festival to be held online, says Jeffrey


KOTA KINABALU: The state-level Kaamatan festival this May will be held behind closed doors in accordance with the strict Health Ministry’s standard operating procedures (SOP).
State Kaamatan organising chairman Datuk Seri Dr Jeffrey Kitingan said the state harvest festival set to kick off on May 1 will be held online as planned but the number of people allowed to attend physically will be restricted.
He said the state cabinet has agreed that this year’s Kaamatan will take place, and celebrations will be held at the Hongkod Koisaan hall on the grounds of the Kadazandusun Cultural Association in Penampang.
Speaking after chairing the organising committee meeting here on Friday, (April 23) he said there will be no open house, and attendance will be limited to 50 people or 30% of the venue capacity, whichever is lower. ....
