Taipei government criticized over book on virus response

The Taipei City Government has been accused of using public funds to glorify a mayoral hopeful, after it last week published a book lauding the city’s COVID-19 response for more than NT$3,000 (US$107.06) per copy.
Critics on Sunday decried the book, titled <i>Record of Resilience: Documenting Taipei’s Pandemic Response</i> (堅韌的疫誌 台北市防疫紀實), as an attempt to pave the way to city hall for Taipei Deputy Mayor Vivian Huang (黃珊珊).
Huang who is expected to run for mayor in November is mentioned 44 times throughout the book and in all but one of its 15 chapters, said Taipei City Councilor Chien Shu-pei (簡舒培) ....

Next two weeks critical, experts say

The next two weeks are critical for containing the COVID-19 outbreak, which hinges on the cooperation of confirmed cases and the public, infectious-disease experts said on Saturday.
After a sharp spike in cases, the Central Epidemic Command Center on Saturday raised the pandemic alert for Taipei and New Taipei City to level 3 until May 28.
While serious, Taiwan would make it through if the outbreak is contained over the next two weeks, said Chen Yee-chun (陳宜君), director of National Taiwan University Hospital’s (NTUH) Division of Infectious Diseases.
Cases have been climbing so rapidly due in part to the reluctance of confirmed cases ....

Taipei City to welcome runaway migrants at COVID-19 testing sites


TAIPEI (The China Post) — Taipei City Mayor Ko Wen-je (柯文哲) announced on Friday new epidemic prevention measures that allow runaway migrant workers to test for COVID-19 without fear of being arrested.
The announcement was made during a press conference during which Mayor Ko along with the Minister of Health and Welfare Chen Shih-chung (陳時中) announced a series of epidemic-prevention measures to combat the rise of local infections and new cases found in the Taipei City Hospital Heping Branch (和平醫院).
The mayor said that the city has set up four Covid-19 testing sites in Wanhua District (萬華區) — Taipei City Hospital Zhongxing Branch (中興醫院), Taipei City Hospital Heping Branch (和平醫院) and West Garden Hospital (西園醫院). ....
