(Contributed photos) BOARDMAN The Boardman Local School Board voted unanimously Monday night to hire two officials who are coming from Poland Local Schools. Mark Zura, who serves as director of Student Services in the Poland Local School District, will be the new principal at Boardman High School. Mike Masucci, principal at Poland Union Elementary School, will be the new principal at Boardman Center Intermediate School. Zura has more than 20 years of educational experience, half of which was spent at Boardman. He will replace Principal Cindy Fernback, who is retiring effective June 30 after 32 years in Boardman Local Schools. Zura’s three-year contract begins July 1. ....
WARREN A Trumbull County sheriff deputy used the beach area at Mosquito Lake State Park to help him become a world martial arts champion. Deputy John Barhoover, a graduate of Lakeview High School and Hiram College, took first place in the traditional beach poomsae category at the fourth annual Lents Taekwondo Worldwide Online Sports Poomsae Open 2021. Poomsae is a taekwondo term meaning a defined pattern of defense-and-attack motions. For half a decade, Barhoover, an Air Force veteran who was deployed to Iraq, has been training under masters Justin Taylor of Canfield and Darrin Warren of Fowler, who used to have a martial arts school in Champion. Barhoover said the taekwondo experience has “definitely helped him” in his deputy job. ....
Mar 14, 2021 YOUNGSTOWN A seventh-grade boy from Struthers lasted nine rounds to become grand champion of the 88th annual 21-WFMJ Regional Spelling Bee in downtown Youngstown on Saturday. Thirteen area school champions took part in the competition, which eventually was won by Christopher Dominick from Struthers Middle School, who won on the word “stalwart.” In the past, Christopher represented Struthers in the bee as a third-grader and also was scheduled to appear last year, but the bee was canceled just days prior to the event because of the pandemic. Due to COVID-19 restrictions this year, the event was open to limited family members only. ....

Staff report BOARDMAN Boardman Center Intermediate School is creating a sensory room to help meet the physical and social/emotional needs of students. Meridian HealthCare is partnering with the school to sponsor the $20,000 project, and also expand the project’s reach not only to include special-needs students, but to create a safe space for all students who may struggle with behavioral or mental health issues. Sensory rooms traditionally are a therapeutic place with a variety of equipment that provides special-needs students with personalized sensory input. The goal is to help these children calm and focus themselves and gain balance and motor skills. This promotes self-organization and positive change while also providing a safe space for students. ....
