She was born not three miles east of here in the town of madison and she spent a lot of time in this area as well as bucktown a few miles west of here. It was here in this area of Dorchester County that she learned the skills vital to make her a successful conductor on the underground railroad, reading the landscape, reading the stars, foraging for food and being comfortable outdoors by herself. Id like to highlight a little bit about our Visitors Center. This building here is lined in cedar which is a reference to her time in the timber fields spent with her father.
