Work to repair ancient Moab petroglyph underway, but officials say it'll 'never be the same'


As the field manager of the Bureau of Land Management s Moab Field Office, Gaddis-Wyatt had worked to ensure that Birthing Rock, otherwise known as Birthing Scene Petroglyph, as well as thousands of other unique archeological sites were preserved for future generations.
Despite the signage and fencing surrounding the large boulder to discourage vandalism or graffiti, there wasn t enough to stop what happened to it.
Now, as the cleanup of the vandalism begins, Gaddis-Wyatt said she s mostly optimistic about the future of the defaced petroglyph; still, she said the archeological site will still never be the same, even though parts of the site weren t defaced and people will be able to view the ancient artwork in the future. ....

Vandals Deface 'Birthing Rock,' 1000-Year-Old Rock Art in Utah

The Moab region is home to some of the most significant archaeological sites and national parks in North America and the Birthing Rock petroglyphs are located in territory belonging to the Anasazi, Fremont, and Ute cultures. The images are based on celestial observations and decorated with animal and human figures. Although there is no reliable dating technique for rock art void of organic matter, archaeologists have dated the panel’s artwork to around 1,000 years ago.

The Bureau of Land Management completed some minimal emergency treatment on the Birthing Rock petroglyph panel on Wednesday. The site is at least 1,000 years old and was found marred by obscenities earlier this week. So what do conservators consider before attempting to mitigate damage at a cultural site like Birthing Rock? Today on the news, we speak with former BLM Moab archeologist Don Montoya. He currently works as a consultant with land management agencies and has plenty of experience in damage assessment. Montoya says this is not the first time the Birthing Rock panel has suffered vandalism.
