join us every sunday 4:00 eastern time. stay tuned for the latest news right here in the newsroom. captions by vitac www.vitac.com we begin with the latest on the rare and deadly snowstorm that hammered the northeast this weekend. it is winding down now but not before knocking out power to more than 4 million people. four states have declared emergencies. new york, new jersey, connecticut and massachusetts. all kinds of travel across the east coast is impacted. this amtrak train from rochester, new york, was stranded near palmer, massachusetts, for 13 hours. many flights were also grounded or diverted. airlines are still trying to clear out the backlog. the storm is blamed for at least five deaths. a pennsylvania man was killed when a snow-covered tree fell into his house. two people were killed on icy roads near philly. two others died in connecticut and massachusetts. cnn is covering every angle of this storm. our chad myers is in york, pennsylvania. susan candiot

manhattan. thanks so much, susan candiotti. so this rare halloween weekend snow in the northeast is impacting more than just new yorkers. we have storm team coverage with meteorologist jacqui jeras in the cnn weather center and we got chad myers in the field in his own with severe weather center in york, pennsylvania. let s begin with you chad. amazing accumulation since the last time you and i spoke an hour ago. reporter: i know. no question. we pick up at least two inches in one hour without a question. we travel a lot for cnn but i usually travel for hurricanes. this is the first time because i vacation in warm spots, this is the first time i ever had a snow brush in my rental car. it was include in the price of the rent alcar because they knew we were going to need it. take a look at the ground. cars literally just drove on this. not 30 seconds ago. it s turning white again. the tracks as this car goes by the tracks are black right where the tire took away some of tha
see more than a foot of the white stuff. that s actually especially troubling because the trees are not ready at all for this. the trees, still plenty of leaves on them. you have forecasters saying heavy, wet snow, high winds. those are the perfect ingredients for potentially a large problem with the electric grid. we ll have in-depth coverage of the storm with meteorologist chad myers and jacqui jeras in just a few moments. the florida highway patrol arrested a driver accused of going 120 miles per hour. that driver, a miami police officer. the highway patrol says the miami officer was on his way to a second job when he was pulled over and that he was arrested at gunpoint after ignoring multiple warnings to stop. and wikileaks founder julian assange could learn next week whether he will be extradited to sweden. assange deanalyze the accusations saying they are an attempt to smear him because of his work as head of wikileaks which has published confidential u.s. diplo
severe weather center. first let s get to cnn s chad myers. chad, it looks like winter has already arrived in western pennsylvania and it did it early. reporter: it really surprised a lot of people. and it even surprised me because on wednesday, this really wasn t forecast to be a one-foot snow event. then it surprised me today when i went to the rental counter at the airport and said, i need a four-wheel drive. and he said, why? now we re in this position where snow s coming down. a couple of trees on some lines. i don t think they re power lines, more like cable lines or telephone wires. now that it s starting to get dark, things are starting to get colder. this coldness will begin to freeze all this muck on the roadway. there s stuff on the side of the roadways. this stuff here, it s just hard it s got salt and grime and stuff in it. that s going to freeze and this road will become one big ice chunk. we re seeing accidents all across the roads and highways in york coun
