New York (CNN Business)When Jerry Callahan had his first bite of a Sumo Citrus fruit about nine years ago, he knew he d tried something special. This is going to go crazy, he thought. As the group vice president of produce and floral at the grocery store chain Albertsons, Callahan is essentially a produce trend-spotter by trade and he s eaten a lot of fruit. But he described Sumo Citrus as unique. The eating experience, there s just nothing like it, he said. The fruit may appear unappealing at first: It looks like a small, wrinkly orange with a knob akin to the top knot worn by the Sumo wrestlers for which it s named. But it s actually a hybrid of navel oranges, pomelos and mandarins and tastes like an extra-sweet mandarin. It peels easily, thanks in part to that knobby handle, and doesn t make your fingers too sticky. ....
New Dekopon mandarin meets good consumer demand The California citrus season has been going strong these past months with good volumes and strong demand. California-based Trinity Fruit launched a new variety of mandarin this season and the company has been seeing a good response from consumers.
First season for the Dekopon variety Trinity Fruit offers a wide variety of citrus options, but this year they have added a new variety of mandarin to their line-up: the Dekopon variety. “This is the first season we are harvesting the Dekopon variety,” says Angela Hernandez, adding: “We are launching them under our new Big Honeys® brand, which was created specifically for this varietal.” ....
US: Strong demand for domestic citrus continues Citrus is a staple during the holidays, and with the US domestic citrus in full swing, the market is well supplied. Trinity Fruit, who grow their citrus in California’s San Joaquin Valley, is currently packing clementines, navels, blood oranges and Cara Caras. “The season has been good so far,” says Levon Ganajian, VP of Retail Relations and Business Development at Trinity Fruit. “The weather has been relatively stable this year and as temperatures begin to go down, the fruit is firming up very nicely. We’ve fortunately not seen any weather issues yet this year and are seeing good quality fruit,” he adds. ....
