It was preceded by the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and midway through, Robert Kennedy s assassination. But despite these devastating events, people from across the country gathered together in Washington, D.C. in 1968 to bring attention to poverty in the United States. The Martin Luther King Jr. Research and Education Institute at Stanford University reports that during one of the planning meetings for the Poor People s Campaign, Dr. King described it as the beginning of a new co-operation, understanding, and a determination by poor people of all colors and backgrounds to assert and win their right to a decent life and respect for their culture and dignity. ....
