Activists in Brookline continue to push for more action following the Supreme Judicial Court s ruling that Gerald Alston, a Black firefighter who complained of racism in the workplace in 2010, was unjustly fired after he spoke up.
At a rally on Sunday sponsored by Brookline for Racial Justice and Equity and Brookline Budget Justice, around 100 of Alston s supporters focused on Select Board members Bernard Greene, Nancy Heller and John VanScoyoc, who they say appealed against Alston s case. Greene and Heller are up for re-election on Tuesday. ....

Brookline firefighter Gerald Alston takes fight for justice to polls

Alston is still waiting for justice.
His legal fight, he said, was just one battle in the war to reshape Brookline s attitude toward people of color and minorities.
The next fight will come at the polls Tuesday, when Brookline will vote to fill two seats on the Select Board. The two incumbents running for re-election, Bernard Greene and Nancy Heller, both voted to fire Alston and then to continue appealing his case against the town.
Alston’s case dates back to 2010, when Lt. Paul Pender, one of his Fire Department superiors, mistakenly left the “n-word” in a voicemail for Alston. ....

Brookline Police officers' morale at an all-time low, per survey

Frustration. Anxiety. Resignation.
Those feelings have haunted Brookline Police Department employees in recent months, as the town – and the nation – reckons with issues of social justice and the role of policing in public safety.
The result: Brookline police morale is at an all-time low, according to an anonymous survey of Police Department employees.
The Select Board’s Committee on Policing Reforms surveyed more than 100 department employees – more than 53% of the department’s total employees – between Feb. 22 and March 6.
“The survey found, unsurprisingly, that morale in the department is very low, with 86% calling morale poor and just 3% good or excellent,” according to the committee’s report. ....

Syndicated Local – CBS Boston
BROOKLINE (CBS) – This week, the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court said Gerald Alston was wrongfully fired after complaining of a racist work environment at the Brookline Fire Department.
“The truth is the truth and I knew it was going to come to the surface and right now it vindicates me, it fills me with joy,” Alston said.
Vindication, but not justice. The former Brookline firefighter said he’s relieved his truth has been validated by the state’s highest court.
“I was relying on my union to step up and help and they didn’t do so either. I feel as though like there has to be something in place for the little people,” Alston said. ....

BOSTON The highest court in Massachusetts in a decision released Tuesday sided with a former firefighter who has been involved in a yearslong battle with the town of Brookline over what he said was a racist work environment.
The Supreme Judicial Court said the town was wrong when it terminated Gerald Alston, who is Black, after he refused to return to work and stopped communicating with the department, which he said was due to a fear of working in a racially hostile environment, The Boston Globe reported.
The court also backed the state Civil Service Commission, which ordered Alston reinstated in 2019. ....
