as massive flames ripped through their apartment building in berkeley. firefighters at one point were forced out as sky-high flames and plumes of smoke, you can see right here, gutted the struck our dwight way just three blocks west of people s park. right now the fire is out, but the damage is done. nbc bay area s christie smith is lye outside the charred remains of that building right now. christie, it is just amazing that everyone made it out alive. reporter: you know, that is exactly right. right now firefighters are staying outside, too, for the most part and that s because the building is so unstable. there s concern that the walls might collapse on other buildings around it. it really doesn t look that bad from here, but the roof, the floors and the back of the building are gone. this is a huge fire that burned for hours and displaced up to 50 people including students who left with just the clothes on their backs. one thing i did, i took out my camera. adman ....
