Reforms will not work until establishment has any role in elections, says Bilawal - Newspaper

KARACHI: The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) on Monday said that there would be no benefit of electoral reforms and use of technology if the role of the powerful establishment continued to exist in the polling system as it would make every election controversial.
The PPP came up with this thought on a fresh direct offer from Prime Minister Imran Khan to opposition to discuss electoral reforms, ruling out any possibility of the required results from such an exercise if the establishment did not agree to keep itself at distance from elections in the country.
At the same time the PPP also sounded cautious over the offer from the PM accusing him of being part of rigging in the 2018 general elections. ....

PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari said on Monday that the most important and fundamental aspect for stopping electoral rigging was to stamp out the role of the establishment in elections, adding that elections would continue to be controversial no matter how much legislation was done if the establishment had an active role in the electoral process.
Addressing a press conference in Karachi flanked by other party leaders, the PPP chairman said that while there was need for legislation and transitional reforms in the electoral process, the most important and fundamental aspect for stopping rigging in elections legislation is certainly one aspect is the role of the establishment in elections. ....

KARACHI: PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari on Monday said that the PPP has always been an advocate of electoral reforms, adding that the party is ready for such reforms.
In a bid to stop rigging in elections, it is necessary to introduce legislation, said Bilawal while addressing a press conference at the Bilawal House in Karachi.
