COVID-19 vaccines in Ohio: Colleges persevere with vaccination efforts


When Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine announced his initiative on April 1 to vaccinate as many college students as possible against COVID-19 before the semester s end, the plan was simple yet strategic.
The state would supply its colleges and universities with doses of the one-shot Johnson & Johnson vaccine, and schools would host on-campus vaccine clinics to inoculate students. 
Many of Ohio s 63 colleges and universities vaccinated their students at clinics last week. Others were scheduling appointments for mass vaccination clinics planned throughout April. 
Then the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced Tuesday that use of J&J s Janssen COVID-19 vaccine should be halted temporarily to give officials time to investigate a potential link between the vaccine and severe blood clots. Six women out of more than 6.8 million vaccinated with J&J had clotting; one of those women died.  ....

College campuses statewide begin distributing doses of COVID-19 vaccine to students
The Johnson & Johnson vaccine is or will soon be available to students on private and public campuses statewide.

COLUMBUS, Ohio Jonathan Kim, Jack Robinson and Pranav Murali had appointments to get a COVID-19 vaccination Monday afternoon and they didn’t have to travel far from their dorm to get it done. 
I m not too worried about myself I m more worried about like my parents, Kim said.
I m ready to have a fun summer and go out more, Robinson said.  
They are among the college students statewide who now have access to vaccine clinics on campus. It’s part of a plan announced by Governor Mike DeWine last week. ....

In partnership with the Wood County Health Department, Bowling Green State University is hosting a series of large-scale COVID-19 vaccination clinics at the Perry Field House on the Bowling Green campus.
The first clinic took place Tuesday, March 30, with thousands of vaccines administered.
This is a significant moment for BGSU and our community, said BGSU Chief Health Officer Ben Batey. Vaccines are proven to be safe and the most effective tool in lowering case numbers. With every vaccination, we are one step closer to being on the other side of the global pandemic.
We are pleased to partner with the Wood County Health Department for this important public health initiative. Because of the size of BGSU s facilities, we are able to get thousands of people vaccinated daily, quickly and efficiently. ....
